Where to Kayak in Fuerteventura: Best Areas and Tips

If you are wondering where to kayak in Fuerteventura, the answer depends quite a lot on your experience and, above all, on sea conditions. The island has calm areas where you can get started with a guided tour, and other, much more exposed coasts where paddling requires real sea kayaking experience.

Among my favourites for planning a holiday are Corralejo and Isla de Lobos, Caleta de Fuste and certain sections of the south such as Sotavento. If you already have experience, the west coast opens up much more adventurous possibilities, although here the Atlantic is in charge and you should not improvise.

One of the keys is to remember that the best places are spread across Fuerteventura. If you have a car you can stay wherever you prefer and travel to Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste or the south depending on the activity you have booked and the conditions forecast for that day.

1. Isla de Lobos: One of the Best Areas for Kayaking in Fuerteventura

If I had to choose one especially representative experience, I would start with Isla de Lobos.

The islet lies off Corralejo, and its transparent waters, volcanic reefs and small lagoons make up one of the most attractive settings in Fuerteventura for kayaking. The specialist operators in the area offer routes both for people who are just starting out and for experienced paddlers.

One of the tours organised from Corralejo involves a crossing of about 4.5 kilometres each way (roughly 9 kilometres in total) and combines kayaking with snorkelling. This gives a good idea of why, although it can technically be done without previous experience as part of a guided activity, we are not simply talking about paddling for a few minutes next to the beach.

In addition, the channel between Corralejo and Lobos can be affected by tides, currents and swell. If you have no sea kayaking experience, my recommendation is clear: make the crossing with a professional guide.

Lobos is also a protected natural area, and visits are subject to regulation and carrying capacity. If your tour includes going ashore, confirm with the operator how the corresponding authorisation is handled.

2. Corralejo and Its Dunes: Kayaking with Spectacular Views

Without leaving the north we find another of the great areas for paddling: the coast in front of the Corralejo Natural Park.

The pale sandy beaches, blue water and views towards Lobos create one of the most recognisable landscapes in Fuerteventura. Kayak Fuerteventura lists the Corralejo Dunes among its main navigation areas. This can be an interesting alternative if you want to enjoy kayaking without necessarily centring the day on reaching Isla de Lobos.

The north is also perfect for rounding off the day. You can spend a few hours on the activity and then explore Corralejo, the dunes or continue towards El Cotillo. In the Ecocar Fuerteventura destinations section you can find more ideas for planning your route around this part of the island.

3. Caleta de Fuste: A Good Option for Beginners

If you are kayaking for the first time, Caleta de Fuste is one of the most comfortable options. Its bay offers a more sheltered environment than many of the open stretches of Fuerteventura's coastline, and there are kayak hire activities that take place within the Puerto Castillo bay itself. Before setting out, basic safety instructions and paddling technique are provided.

This makes it a good place for couples, families or travellers who want to try kayaking without yet planning a crossing of several kilometres on open sea.

In addition, this area is especially close to home for us: Ecocar is a family business from Caleta de Fuste, where we have our office as well as a direct vehicle delivery service at the airport.

You can easily combine an hour of kayaking with the beach, lunch and an afternoon exploring other points along the east coast.

4. Sotavento Beach: Paddling in a Different Landscape

The Sotavento Beach, in the south of Fuerteventura, is famous for its huge stretches of sand and for the lagoon that forms at certain tides. The sandbar lying off the coast can create a lagoon several kilometres long, although its presence and depth depend on the state of the tide. It is precisely this feature that makes the area interesting for different water sports.

Here I would not take it for granted that you will always find the same conditions. Before planning a day of kayaking, it is worth checking the tide, the wind and whether activities are available that day.

Sotavento can also be part of a wider route through the south. If you have a car you can combine it with Costa Calma and then continue towards Morro Jable.

5. The East Coast: Discovering Another Side of Fuerteventura

If you have paddled before and want to get away from the best-known spots, the east coast of Fuerteventura offers very different routes.

Specialist operators describe this area for its cliffs and lava flows that run down to the ocean, as well as small coastal villages away from the busier tourist areas.

For this kind of outing I would opt for an organised route rather than choosing a beach at random and putting the kayak in the water.

Wind is an inseparable feature of Fuerteventura, and conditions can change a lot from one coast to another. A local guide can select the right entry point and route for that day's forecast.

6. Ajuy: Best with Experience and a Guide

Some guides list the Ajuy Caves among the most attractive places to explore from the water.

Visually, it is easy to see why: cliffs, dark rock and caves create an environment completely different from the turquoise beaches of the north. But here the landscape has to take second place and ocean conditions first place.

Senda Ecoway warns of the presence of currents and recommends doing the activity with a guide.

For that reason, I would not present Ajuy as a recommendation for someone hiring a kayak for the first time. If this coast interests you, look for an organised outing and let the professional decide whether conditions allow it.

7. Cofete: Spectacular, but Not a Place to Improvise with a Kayak

Cofete is a close parallel, but with even more reason. It is one of the most impressive beaches in Fuerteventura and also one of the areas where the ocean deserves particular respect. The official tourist information itself describes a rough sea and recommends extreme caution. The west coast, from El Cotillo towards Cofete, is very exposed to the northern and north-western swells. Specialist operators indicate that certain days may be suitable for experienced paddlers, while in powerful seas they are reserved for experts.

That is why I would include Cofete among the great places for advanced sea kayaking, not among the places to go with a recreational kayak simply because the landscape is spectacular.

And there is another important detail if you are going by car: the final access to Cofete is along an unpaved track. Ecocar's cars are not allowed to drive off tarmac; for routes such as Cofete you need a vehicle authorised for that type of road. You can check the conditions before booking in the Ecocar information section.

Where to Kayak If You Are a Beginner?

If you have never used a sea kayak, I would narrow the choice down to sheltered areas and accompanied activities. Caleta de Fuste is probably the simplest option for a first taste.

In the north there are also guided tours from Corralejo designed for people with no previous experience. In the case of Isla de Lobos, although some operators accept beginners, the crossing goes through open water and requires a minimum level of fitness.

I would not confuse a beginner-friendly guided tour with hiring a kayak and doing exactly the same route on your own. In fact, one of the specialist operators in Corralejo limits its independent sea kayak hire to people with previous experience.

What to Check Before Heading Out Kayaking

What to Check Before Heading Out Kayaking

In Fuerteventura I would always check four things before paddling: wind, swell, current and tide. I would also wear a life jacket, use sun protection and carry water, and keep my phone and any important items protected in a dry bag.

If you do not know the coast, choose a guided tour. A calm-looking sea from the shore does not guarantee that a crossing will be easy, especially in channels, headlands and open coasts.

And if you are going to try several activities during your holiday, leave some margin in your itinerary. It is better to move the kayaking to another day if conditions are not good than to try to keep the booking at any price.

How to Get Around the Best Kayaking Areas in Fuerteventura

One of the particular features of this guide is that we are talking about places spread from Corralejo to Jandía.

If you want to combine activities in several parts of the island, having a car makes organisation much easier.

With Ecocar car hire in Fuerteventura you pick up the vehicle directly at the Parking P1 of the airport, with no buses and no transfer to an external office. Most of the fleet is also hired with no excess and no card hold, and with unlimited mileage.

That allows you, for example, to book a kayak tour in Corralejo one day and drive to Sotavento or Morro Jable the next without worrying about a mileage limit.

If you are travelling with several people or carrying a lot of luggage, it is also worth checking Ecocar's fleet before booking and choosing a car with enough boot capacity.

What Is the Best Place to Kayak in Fuerteventura?

If I had to pick one for scenery and experience, I would choose Corralejo and Isla de Lobos. It is one of the areas with the longest sea kayaking tradition on the island and offers options for different levels.

To get started, however, I would choose Caleta de Fuste first. And if you are an experienced paddler looking for something more demanding, then I would begin to consider routes along the east or west coast accompanied by local professionals.

The important thing is not to choose based on the photograph alone. In Fuerteventura the wind and the Atlantic are part of the experience, so the best place to paddle is always the one that suits your level and the conditions on the day.

If you want to move between all these areas with freedom, you can book your hire car in Fuerteventura with Ecocar, pick it up directly when you land and start exploring the island from day one
