Sotavento Beaches in Fuerteventura: Lagoon, Access and Parking

The Sotavento beaches in Fuerteventura stretch for around nine kilometres along the eastern coast of the Jandía Peninsula, between Costa Calma and Morro Jable. Their most famous feature is the turquoise lagoon that forms behind a long sandbar. However, the lagoon changes with the tides, and not every access road is suitable for all vehicles. Choosing the right section and checking how to get there will help you make the most of your visit.

Which Sotavento Beach Should You Visit?

Sotavento consists of five beaches: La Barca, Risco del Paso, Mirador, Malnombre and Los Canarios. Although they belong to the same stretch of coastline, they offer different landscapes and access conditions.

Searches such as "Sotavento beaches Fuerteventura" or "Fuerteventura Sotavento beaches" refer to this group of beaches rather than one specific access point. That is why it helps to choose which section you want to visit first.

If you want to see the lagoon, La Barca is a good starting point. For vast sandy areas and water sports, consider Risco del Paso. If you prefer panoramic views from above, head to Mirador del Salmo.

- La Barca: one of the best-known spots for seeing the lagoon, close to the Los Gorriones hotel area. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are also common here.

- Risco del Paso: known for its wide sandy beaches and shallow channels created by the tides. It is particularly attractive for walking and photography, although access is restricted for some hire cars.

- Malnombre: a beach surrounded by cliffs, with a beach bar in the area. Check the access conditions before setting off.

- Mirador del Salmo: offers elevated views over part of Sotavento and its lagoon without having to go down to the beach. It should not be confused with the beach called Mirador.

You do not need to visit all five sections. For a first trip, choosing one according to the tides, wind and vehicle available is usually more practical.

When Is the Best Time to See the Sotavento Lagoon?

The lagoon forms when seawater flows behind a long sandbar. At high tide, particularly when the tidal range is large enough, more water usually collects in the lagoon. At low tide, extensive stretches of sand become exposed.

There is no fixed time of day when the lagoon is full, and high tide alone does not guarantee that it will look like the photographs.

Before travelling, check the tide predictions from Puertos del Estado, paying attention to the time of high tide, the predicted water level and the location used for the forecast.

If you want to walk along the sand, low tide may be more convenient, but remember to check when the water will rise again. Avoid crossing channels or entering areas that could become isolated by the incoming tide.

Wind is another important factor. The trade winds tend to strengthen during summer, creating good conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing, although they can make a relaxing beach day less comfortable.

If you plan to swim, remember that the shallow lagoon is different from the open sea, where currents may be present. When visiting with children, stay away from water sports areas and check whether lifeguards are on duty at your chosen beach.

How to Get to Sotavento and Where to Park

The main road for reaching Sotavento is the FV-2, which connects Costa Calma and Morro Jable.

From Costa Calma, the nearest access points are approximately 10-15 minutes away by car. From Fuerteventura Airport, allow around one hour of driving, depending on which section you choose.

There is no single car park serving all the Sotavento beaches. It is important to distinguish between a paved access road and an unpaved parking area.

Access to La Barca and Los Gorriones

From the FV-2, follow the signs towards the Los Gorriones hotel area and Playa de la Barca.

In 2023, Pájara Town Council completed the resurfacing of 1.5 kilometres of the Los Gorriones road.

However, a paved road does not mean that every parking area near the beach is also paved. Some commonly used parking spaces have dirt surfaces.

If you are driving a standard Ecocar hire car, make sure you can park legally without leaving the tarmac. Do not continue into an unpaved car park, even if the surface looks easy to drive on.

Access to Risco del Paso

Risco del Paso has a parking area close to the beach, but the Visit Jandía guide to Sotavento describes the final kilometres of the access route as unpaved.

For this reason, we do not recommend driving to that car park in a standard Ecocar hire car. You would first need to check the conditions applying to the vehicle and the specific route.

Access to Mirador del Salmo

To reach Mirador del Salmo, take the exit signposted Playa del Salmo from the FV-2 and continue along the FV-602.

The viewpoint is beside the road and has a small area where vehicles often stop. Before parking, check the road signs, surface conditions and whether you can manoeuvre safely.

It is a useful alternative if you want to enjoy the views of Sotavento without driving along the dirt tracks leading to some of the beach parking areas.

Can You Visit Sotavento with a Hire Car?

Yes, you can visit Sotavento with a hire car, but you must choose access routes and parking areas that do not require you to leave paved roads.

At Ecocar, standard rental cars are not permitted on dirt tracks, even when they are in good condition. The insurance does not cover damage caused by driving outside paved roads.

Before travelling to La Barca, Risco del Paso or another part of Sotavento, check Ecocar's driving conditions.

If your itinerary includes unpaved tracks, you can review the features and rental conditions of our 4x4 hire vehicles in Fuerteventura. Having a four-wheel-drive vehicle does not automatically mean that every route is authorised.

How Long to Spend at Sotavento and What to Visit Nearby

For a first visit, two or three hours may be enough to enjoy the scenery, reach the sand using a suitable access route and take a walk. If you plan to practise water sports, allow more time and check the conditions with your chosen school.

Sotavento is part of a protected natural environment, so stay on designated paths, avoid parking on vegetation and do not disturb birds using the lagoon.

Bring water, sun protection and an extra layer for the wind, particularly if you plan to spend several hours by the sea.

If you are exploring the beaches of Jandía in Fuerteventura, remember that Sotavento and Cofete lie on opposite sides of the peninsula and have very different access routes. A simple itinerary is to visit Mirador del Salmo first and then continue towards Costa Calma or Morro Jable. Standard Ecocar hire cars are not permitted on the track to Cofete.

If you are planning to explore the beaches of southern Fuerteventura, check the access conditions before setting off. With Ecocar, you can collect your hire car directly from Parking P1 at Fuerteventura Airport, without transfers, and check the rental conditions to plan your route with confidence.
