Seeing Dolphins in Fuerteventura: Where, When and the Best Tours
October 7, 2026

Seeing dolphins in Fuerteventura is one of those activities that is well worth booking during a holiday on the island.
The tours head out into the Atlantic in search of wild dolphins, whales and other cetaceans, mainly from southern ports such as Morro Jable, although there are also options in other areas.
The first thing to be clear about is something important: we are talking about wild animals. No responsible tour should guarantee that you will see dolphins on a specific day.
The crew knows the usual areas, reads the sea conditions and looks for groups of cetaceans, but in the end it is nature that decides.
That is why, rather than looking for a promise of "guaranteed dolphins," I would carefully choose the departure area, the type of boat and an authorised operator.
Where to See Dolphins in Fuerteventura?
Although there are tours from different points on the island, the south of Fuerteventura accounts for a particularly large share of the whale and dolphin watching on offer.
Morro Jable and Jandía If I had to name the main base for organising this activity, it would be Morro Jable. Various tours leave from its port to look for dolphins and whales off the Jandía coast. Currently there are options ranging from quick outings of around an hour and a half or two hours to four-hour catamaran tours, as well as options that combine wildlife watching with a swim or other activities. Fuerteventura's official tourism website itself lists dolphin and whale watching among the activities available from Morro Jable. This variety makes it a very practical area whether you only want to spend a few hours at sea or are looking for a more relaxed tour that takes up a good part of the morning.
Costa Calma and the south of the island If you are staying in Costa Calma, you will also find activities linked to cetacean watching. Depending on the operator, transfer to the departure point may be included, or you may have to make your own way there. I would check this detail before booking. It is not the same to book a tour that departs near your hotel as to find out later that you have to be at Morro Jable port early in the morning.
Caleta de Fuste There is also a wildlife-watching offer in the central part of Fuerteventura. Caleta de Fuste can be especially convenient if you are staying near the airport or want to avoid the journey to Jandía. Even so, the variety of tours currently available is greater in the south. At Ecocar we know this area well because we are a family business from Caleta de Fuste and have been working in Fuerteventura since 1993.
What Is the Best Time of Year to See Dolphins in Fuerteventura? Cetaceans can be found in Canarian waters all year round, so you do not necessarily have to plan your trip around a single month. That does not mean every day is the same. The species present, the state of the sea, the wind and the location of the animals all change. The crew decides the route taking precisely those conditions into account. That is why, if wildlife watching is one of the activities you are most looking forward to, I would avoid booking it for the last hours of your holiday. Leaving some margin allows you to reschedule the activity if a trip has to be cancelled because of bad weather.
What Dolphins and Whales Can You See?
The waters of the Canary Islands are home to a great diversity of cetaceans. The species that can be observed include different types of dolphins, as well as pilot whales, sperm whales and several species of whale. That said, the fact that a species is present in Canarian waters does not mean it is a regular sighting on every tour. I would avoid choosing a tour because a website shows a spectacular photograph of one particular species. The approach should be exactly the opposite: go out and discover which marine wildlife appears that day. That element of uncertainty is precisely part of the experience.
How Long Does a Dolphin-Watching Tour Last?
There is quite a lot of variety. Currently, for example, we find tours from Morro Jable lasting approximately:
1.5-2 hours for outings focused mainly on looking for cetaceans; around 2.5 hours when time is added for other activities; 3.5-4 hours on sailing boats or catamarans geared more towards enjoying a full morning at sea.
If you are travelling with small children or get seasick easily, it may be more comfortable to start with a short tour. If you want to enjoy the sailing, have a swim and make the outing one of the main plans of the day, a multi-hour catamaran or sailing boat may make more sense.
How Much Does It Cost to See Dolphins in Fuerteventura?
The price varies quite a lot depending on the boat, the duration, the number of passengers and the services included. As a guide, in August 2026 we found tours from Morro Jable from approximately €45-55 per adult for some short outings, while 3.5-4 hour experiences on a sailing boat or catamaran appear at around €75-82. Take these as indicative prices, not fixed rates. Before booking, always check the up-to-date price and what is included: transfer; food and drink; snorkelling; duration; cancellation; minimum age; maximum number of passengers. Sometimes a more expensive tour can be worth it if it includes transport from the hotel or lasts twice as long.
How to Choose a Responsible Cetacean-Watching Tour
This point matters more to me than saving a few euros. Cetacean watching is regulated in the Canary Islands, and authorised boats are identified by the Barco Azul badge. The regulations set out rules to reduce disturbance to the animals. Among other measures, boats must not chase cetaceans, cut across their path, separate them from the group, feed them or try to make physical contact with them. The regulations also prohibit swimming or diving near cetaceans. That is why I would be wary of any activity that promises to touch, chase or swim with wild dolphins. The best sighting is the one in which the boat adapts its behaviour to the animals, and not the other way around.
Is Seeing Dolphins Guaranteed?
No.
And in fact, I think it's a good sign when an operator admits this. Crews may know the waters of Fuerteventura very well, but they don't control where each group of animals will be.
You might see lots of dolphins, a whale might appear, you might come across other marine animals, or the day might turn out to be quieter.
That is why I would approach the tour as a marine wildlife-watching outing, not as a visit to a park where the animals appear at a set time.

What to Bring on a Dolphin-Watching Tour
There's not much you need, but a few things help: sun protection; sunglasses; a cap; a light layer if it's windy; water if it isn't included; swimwear if the tour allows a swimming stop; a cover or protection for your phone. If you tend to get seasick, check beforehand what measures you can take and avoid improvising once on board. I would also arrive at the port with time to spare. Tours leave at set times, and missing the departure because you miscalculated the journey from your accommodation is a rather frustrating way to start the day.
How to Get to Morro Jable to See Dolphins
If you're staying in the south, getting to the port is easy. But if you're staying in Caleta de Fuste, Puerto del Rosario or Corralejo, you'll have to travel quite a bit further. Before booking, always check whether the tour includes a transfer. Some of the current departures from Morro Jable offer a transfer service, but not all bookings or accommodations necessarily have the same conditions. If you have a car, you have the advantage of organising the day on your own. You can get to the port, do the tour and then take the opportunity to explore Jandía, Costa Calma or another spot in the south. That is precisely why unlimited mileage is useful in Fuerteventura: you can change areas without constantly calculating the distance.
Exploring Fuerteventura by Car After the Tour
Ecocar recommends not making a long journey just for a single activity if you can use the opportunity to discover the area. If you go to Morro Jable first thing in the morning, for example, after the wildlife watching you can continue exploring the south. In our Fuerteventura destinations section you can find ideas to round off your trip. And if you are still planning your holiday, you can check Ecocar's full fleet of cars to choose the vehicle according to the number of people and luggage you are travelling with. With car hire in Fuerteventura with Ecocar, you pick up the vehicle directly at the Parking P1 of the airport, with no buses or journeys to external offices. We also offer a fixed final price, unlimited mileage and, on most of our fleet, no excess and no card hold. That way you can leave the airport and start your route around the island straight away.
