Caleta de Fuste Natural Pool: How to Get There, Park and Visit
October 12, 2026

The Caleta de Fuste natural pool, also known as Krabbenfelsen or the secret pool, is a seawater pool surrounded by volcanic rocks on the east coast of Fuerteventura. It is close to the seafront promenade but can be easy to miss: at high tide, it may be covered by the sea, and the final approach involves walking across uneven rocks.
The most important thing is to visit around low tide and check that the waves are calm enough to approach safely.
Where Is the Caleta de Fuste Natural Pool?
The pool is located on a small rocky headland north of the main tourist area of Caleta de Fuste, in the municipality of Antigua, towards Nuevo Horizonte. It is not on Castillo Beach and cannot be seen directly from the road.
Approximate coordinates: 28.40098, -13.84997 (see location on Google Maps).
The map pin marks the natural pool itself, not a car park or an accessible walking route. If your navigation app cannot find it, try searching for "Krabbenfelsen", "Caleta de Fuste natural pool" or "Caleta de Fuste secret pool".
How to Get to the Caleta de Fuste Natural Pool
On foot from Caleta de Fuste: follow the seafront promenade north until you reach the rocky section of the coast. From the main tourist area, the walk can take around 10-15 minutes, depending on your starting point. To reach the pool, you will need to leave the promenade and carefully cross uneven rocks, as there is no maintained footpath leading directly to it.
If you are staying in Caleta de Fuste, you do not need to hire a car just to visit this natural pool. You can walk there and use a rental car for excursions to other parts of the island.
By car from Fuerteventura Airport or Puerto del Rosario: follow the FV-2 towards Caleta de Fuste, then head towards the northern section of the seafront along Avenida Marítima. The final approach must be completed on foot. Do not attempt to drive down to the rocks.
Where to Park Near the Natural Pool
Avenida Marítima, near the northern end of the headland, is the most useful reference point. There are free parking areas nearby, although not every space close to the coast is officially designated for parking or has a paved surface.
If you are driving a standard Ecocar hire car, choose somewhere you can park legally without leaving the tarmac. The Ecocar driving conditions do not permit standard rental cars to be driven on dirt tracks, even if they appear easy to navigate.
You will still need to walk a few minutes from where you park. Do not block pedestrian access or use areas that are not designated for parking.
Put on suitable footwear before leaving your car. The main challenge is not the walking distance but the uneven, potentially slippery rocks at the end of the route.
When Is the Best Time to Visit the Caleta de Fuste Natural Pool?
The best time to see the pool is usually around low tide, when more of the rocky basin is exposed. If the sea is calm, you can appreciate the contrast between the clear water and the surrounding volcanic rocks. At high tide, waves may cover the pool completely.
Before setting off, check the AEMET beach and sea forecast for Caleta de Fuste and the local tide times. Remember that beach forecasts describe conditions in the surrounding area, not measurements taken inside the natural pool.
Ideally, visit during daylight, close to low tide and only when the sea is calm. There is no single time of day that works for every visit.
Low tide does not automatically make swimming safe. When there is a strong swell, waves can break over the surrounding rocks even if the water inside the pool looks peaceful. In those conditions, stay at a safe distance and do not climb down.
Visiting the pool is free and there are no official opening hours, but whether you can approach it depends on sea conditions.
Can You Swim in the Caleta de Fuste Natural Pool?
You may see people swimming at Krabbenfelsen during low tide when the sea is calm. However, this is not a managed swimming pool. There are no lifeguards, steps, showers or toilets.
The rocks can be slippery or sharp, and the water depth is uneven. Before considering entering the water, make sure the sea remains calm and that you can get in and out without difficulty.
Wear closed shoes with firm, non-slip soles when approaching the pool. If conditions allow you to enter the water, water shoes may help protect your feet, although they do not remove the risks.
Never jump into the pool or approach the edge while waves are breaking over the rocks.
Climbing down to the pool is not recommended with small children, pushchairs or for visitors with reduced mobility because of the uneven ground and lack of accessible paths.
Is the Caleta de Fuste Natural Pool Worth Visiting?
Yes, especially if your visit coincides with low tide and calm sea conditions. Its main attraction is the chance to see a small volcanic rock pool filled with clear seawater against the rugged coastal landscape.
It is not somewhere to spend an entire day. Once you have found it, around 20-30 minutes may be enough to enjoy the view and take photographs, while keeping an eye on the changing tide.
If conditions are not suitable for approaching the pool, you can continue along the seafront promenade, visit Castillo Beach, which is more suitable for families, or explore the marina area of Caleta de Fuste.
If you want to make the most of your day, you can also explore other destinations along Fuerteventura's east coast.
Ecocar is a family-run car rental company based in Caleta de Fuste since 1993. We offer direct car collection at Fuerteventura Airport's Parking P1 for travellers arriving by plane, with no shuttle transfers required. It is a convenient way to organise excursions around the island while respecting the permitted access routes for your rental vehicle.
